Dedication
This book is dedicated to you. Your taxes paid for my public education from K-12, my community college and my university. Thank you for your tax paying dollars. My undying gratitude has resulted in a lifetime spent creating New Democracy.
Enjoy!
Preface by Mybrid Wonderful
Welcome to the wonderful world of words!
Welcome to Irreni Society, a New Democracy that is of the people, by the people, and for the people, but otherwise everything else is new!
This book is intended for everyone on planet Earth. This is not an text at the university level. It is a conversation suitable for YouTube video scripts for those who prefer video to reading.
You can and should freely copy this book. It is in the public domain. The hope is as many people as possible rewrite, sell, and make videos promoting New Democracy.
Therefore I gave this book a brand, “Irreni World Scale”. This way when there exits multitudes of New Democracy books then you can find this one by searching on Irreni.
You can find Irreni online at: https://irreni.social/.
The purpose of New Democracy is to address and solve all the problems of existing Democracy, hereafter referred to as Old Democracy.
New Democracy is a huge umbrella of ideas and you can choose to engage as much or as little as suits you.
Biography of Mybrid Wonderful
Note: This biography is limited to my qualifications for creating New Democracy.
Who am I to be proposing removing all nations from planet Earth?
These are my bonafides.
New Democracy is a general study, not an expert focus. New Democracy touches on everything in life and therefore inventing New Democracy requires a general understanding of as many things as possible. In other words, a jack of all trades, a master of none as the saying goes.
These are my generalist bonafides.
I was born generally smart. It is always obnoxious to declare how smart one is I find. So I’m going to state my general intelligence as I’m an ‘A’ student among ‘A’ students. In other words, my university required an ‘A’ record to get into university and once I was in I was an ‘A’ student among ‘A’ students.
My specific intelligence is general. This is tricky to explain. I’m neurodivergent. My brain focuses on things differently than is protrayed in popular culture like movies. My brain sees broad patterns where normal intelligence focuses on specific topics like mathematics, biology, art, or what have you.
My brain takes surface level topic patterns across all topics and then creates general patterns across multiple topics. This means I do not have a typical fascination or obsession with one topic. Instead I read on one topic, say anthropology, and then switch to another topic like biology. I’ve read on hundreds of different topics. This is what a generalist does. A generalist does pattern matching across many topics rather than focusing on one topic.
Generalists are rare. This is why you’ve probably never encountered one in ife or in entertainment.
However, I do have one topic I make a living at: software. I mean I have to make a living and software pays well.
When I was in grade school and high school we took personality tests based on aptitude of topics in order to help students decide on possible occupations. I always tested heavily as an engineer. I am an engineer. What sets an engineer apart from other software developers is we spend more time testing than writing code. We are the engineer you want. We test elevators at three-thousand pound loads when the elevator is only sold for one-thousand pounds. I’m really good at mathematics and science.
But I’m also really good at all topics. Hence I was a straight ‘A’ student. However, I was straight ‘A’ because of interest and not just to have the grade level for opportunity.
Chai Tea Eggnog Just using 1 cup of Chai Tea was too sweet for me, so I cut it in half. 1. 1 cup eggnog 2. 1/2 cup water 3. 1/2 cup Chai Tea concentrate 4. whipped cream 5. nutmeg
Okay, so enough about my capability. Now onto my experience.
I can remember at nine-years-old sitting in church criticizing really bad social engineering. In this case a couple was getting married. Our preacher went into how serious marriage commitment was and to not take it lightly because there are over seven-hundred rights and privileges in State and Federal law assigned to marriage. At nine-years old I said to myself, “That’s stupid. Everyone should be allowed to assign those seven-hundred rights individually as we see fit.” The point here is not that is the correct view of marriage rights, but rather I was already social engineering at the age of nine.
My social engineering interest and efforts really took off in 1980 when I graduated from high school and Raygun Reagan became President.
The first thread I pulled for social engineering was American Revolution history. I was fascinated with Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, George Washington, Thomas Paine, James Madison, and Alexander Hamilton. As far as I know this was a unique point in time where so many brilliant people collaborated. I started reading their biographies as well as history of the Revolutionary War and subsequent Constitution creation.
I also started psychology and self-help books in order to manage my neurodivergent maladies. Sadly, in 1980 there was no Autism community with books on neurodivergent management practices. So I was limited to neurotypical help. Turns out that that sleep and physical exercise regimemes for neurotypicals were very helpful for myself.
I started community college in 1987 and took classes on modern anthropology, politics among other social engineering necessities.
Eventually in the 1990s I added consuming day-to-day political news and commentary to my education.
My qualifications are a high scholastic aptitude and a specialty of generality. Further I’ve educated myself for decades by reading on social engineering topics since 1980.
Politically I’m left of left of left. When you think about it this has to be the case. Conservatives are focused on preserving the past. Anyone focused on wholesale replacement of current society has to be liberal. I do not expect many conservatives to engage with New Democracy.
Introduction
This book is divided into two independent sections where each chapter has the section included:
- Overview
- Handbook
Irreni Society is new. It is a Mesh Democracy design as opposed to a Republic. The Overview section gives insight and intuition as to the why and motivation of Mesh Democracy. However, if one is at their wits end with current Democracy and ready to just dig in then jump to the Handbook section.
The Overview section is in a schematic or sketch format. There are no citations. Partly due to the fact that I’m lazy. I’ve been working on Irreni since 1980 and haven’t kept any notes except my own thoughts. Citations will have to be the effort of other people when the time comes. This is one reason the Overview section addresses just why and motivation. This book then fits within the tradition of Thomas Payne’s, “The Rights of Man”. Discussing the academic reasons for why and motivation doesn’t need to be precise with citations. The objective of the Overview section is to scratch an itch. That itch is curiosity for answers:
- What is Mesh Democracy?
- How does it compare to current Democracy?
The Handbook section is what one would expect, how to do this-and-that. Irreni Society is a social engineering project. It is not an ideology project. As engineering then various parts and pieces can be used independent of the whole. Even if one disagrees with much of the design and engineering of Irreni, then one can still create something new and better using various parts one finds agreeable.
My first handbook was a book of Math tables. I’m old enough to have used slide rulers. However, slide rules were not stand-alone technology. Math handbooks with tables of precalculated commonly used numbers existed long before the slide rule. I used this until Sophomore year in high school. Then I bought a scientific calculator from HP.
My next handbook was, “The Runner’s Handbook”. This book still exists and has advice for day-to-day training, marathon training, common injuries, and so on.
The Handbook section is in the spirit of these kinds of handbooks but not in body. The Handbook section is a handbook of quests with suggestions on going about them. You are adventurer going on a quest. One is going on a quest like with Frodo taking the ring to Mount Doom. The initial quest is to find fellow adventurers needed, thirty people to form an Mesh Governing Organization, or MGO. The MGO is the mesh node in Mesh Democracy. How one accomplishes the quest is up to the adventurer where suggestions are given. The Handbook continues assigning finer grained quests with suggestions. The quests are all in support of establishing the MGO.
The Handbook section omits projects. Projects are how two-or-more MGOs coordinate to engineer projects greater than the capabilities of a single MGO. If one is curious about projects there are explanations in the Overview section.
Projects are not included in the Handbook section because forming an MGO will take years. Currently real estate is built as single-family dwellings or apartments. We need new real estate built for thirty people. Further the campus needs new buildings such as a medical bay, dental bay, stores for a year’s supply of food and water, and manufacturing. These campuses do not exist today. Therefore the initial generation will focus on getting MGO campuses off the ground.
The two sections combined give an introduction to New Democracy as both reasoning and action. The book chapters are designed to be self contained with minimal dependency on each other. New Democracy is not an ideology with concepts that fits together like a jigsaw puzzle to create a picture. New Democracy is social engineering better represented as an automobile. An automobile has engineering parts such as the wheel that date back to pre-historic years. An automobile can also have engineering from today that is still being developed such as self-driving. An automobile is not an ideology. It is made up of many pieces of engineering to provide function. New Democracy is made up of many pieces of engineering to provide function.
New Democracy as engineering means that it can be broken down and re-assembled into something different. What matters is how New Democracy performs as engineering.
This is why the Handbook sections are quests and not specific recipes. New Democracy is designed for everyone on Earth to be apart of the same organization. New Democracy supports ten-billion people. Different places on Earth are going to require different automobile designs.
New Democracy is not a legal system. A legal system springs from an ideology such as justice. New Democracy as engineering springs from function. New Democracy depends on the Internet. New Democracy also depends on voting. New Democracy does not depend on any one set of functions to be New Democracy. That’s what defines ideology.
The best way to approach New Democracy and this book is like your favorite food buffet. There are lots of plates to choose from and it takes many, many trips back to the restaurant to sample all the dishes. New Democracy is the best kind of buffet where new dishes are created every time one visits.
Old Democracy is founded on ideology. New Democracy is founded on engineering. Just that fact alone means that grasping the concepts will take everyone a hot minute to adjust their thinking. So, best to read this book as parts rather than in one go. Or multiple goes rather than one go.
And finally, enjoy!
Society, The Unending Frontier
I’m old enough to have experienced watching Star Trek and the Moon Landing in that order. It was very exciting for a young boy growing up in the late 60s and 70s.
Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five year mission to seek out new life; new civilizations; to boldly go where no one has gone before.
What is New Democracy? It is an unending frontier.
Society, the unending frontier. These are the voyages of all life. With unending missions to seek out new ways of life; new innovations of civilization; to boldly go where no one has gone before with unending new social organization.
When we read books we do so with a certain purpose and frame of mind. Sometimes that frame of mind is entertainment. Sometimes that frame of mind is education. Sometimes that frame of mind is political, a mind that asks the questions about what kind of society we want to live in.
What frame of mind should one read this book? Frontier. One should be in a frontier frame of mind. A frame of mind seeking out adventure and all that comes with it like risk and danger. A frame to seek out a new life of improved society and all the change that requires. Engineering. Engineering is not an ideology. Engineering is meant to be cherry-picked, parts innovated and replaced based upon experimentation. Ideology is static, never innovates, and must be taken as a whole, i.e. religion. Responsibility. Any society of, by and for the people means imposed responsibility, not rugged individualism. America is founded on a mindset of rugged individualism which is minimal social responsibility. This book is about maximal responsibility in order to be of, by and for the people. Political. What kind of society do you want to belong too? Action. Everyone reading this book should be of the mindset of what actions to take after reading this book.
Let’s expand on Engineering. Engineering is about designing parts that fit into a whole design. For example, the wheel is an important part of engineering. Tires on cars have changed many times since the car was invented. That’s engineering. Engineering is the opposite of ideology. Ideology makes claims that are unproven and if the outcome of the claims are not realized then the people are at fault. By contrast, in Engineering if the wheel falls off then it is the engineering that is at fault. When thinking in an engineering mindset then one needs to be thinking about the parts within an overall design. Further one needs to think about the design itself.
I encourage you to disagree with and improve on every aspect of the design and parts of New Democracy. That’s the nature of an engineering mindset. Below I’m going to list some of the parts of New Democracy for your engineering consideration and introduction to New Democracy.
New Democracy Design parts:
- Everyone in. This part addresses a defect in human nature: jealousy and selfishness. Everyone in as a part leaves no one behind no matter how limited that person may be, how evil that person may be.
- Unending frontier. This part requires life to continue until the End of the Universe. The heat death of the Universe. This will require unending frontiers that expand into the Solar system, the Milky Way galaxy, and all galaxies of the Universe. Religion is the mortal enemy of unending frontier as religion is founded on life ending and life being solely the providence of Earth.
- Mesh society. Mesh society is a part that requires social organization to be divided into two distinct design parts: mesh nodes and the mesh.
- Mesh nodes. Mesh nodes are of fixed size. The Irreni design calls for this size to be thirty people. The mesh is composed of mesh nodes being connected by common objectives called projects.
- Mesh projects. Mesh projects are what connects mesh nodes. Projects are contracts. Contracts are not enforced, but rather measured for results meeting contract objectives.
- Social innovation. This part requires constant iteration. To this end mesh projects are limited to a maximum of five year duration upon which the contract is either renewed or abandoned based on the mesh nodes remaining in the contract or leaving it.
- Long-term planning. This part requires multi-generational plans. These plans can span centuries and millennia as will be required to manage Earth, the Solar system and explore the Milky Way galaxy.
- Unending experimentation society. There are too many variables in life to ever know precisely how to build perfect systems. This means unending frontiers will require unending experimentation. Project contracts that connect mesh nodes are experiments with stated objectives. These objectives are measured where needed in order to establish effectiveness. This effectiveness is a primary factor when deciding to renew project contracts every five years.
- Survival society. Mesh nodes are micro-governing organizations, or MGOs, of fixed size thirty people. These MGOs can govern under any structure they choose, including hierarchy and theocracy. However, they must meet survival objectives. These include a year’s supply of food, water, electricity and other survival needs. The MGO is in effect a virtual spaceship that can sustain without any dependency on external entities. This survival design gives Mesh Democracy the optimal survival design for large scale disasters such as pandemics, asteroid collisions, and so on.
- Managed society. Mesh nodes join necessary efforts for survival at larger scales such as managing climate by joining mesh projects. These projects demand MGOs fall under membership management. This is equivalent to modern day human rights. Tyrannical MGOs will not be allowed to join a mesh. Tyrannical meshes are incoherent as a concept as they will collapse to one hierarchy.
- Voluntary society. Mesh node membership is voluntary. Mesh project contract membership is voluntary. There does not exist any notion of nation of birth. In order to realize commitments then mesh node membership is also contractual. Typically the mesh node contract is for the same length of maximum project contract length of five years.
- Dependency responsibility. New Democracy requires every citizen to take care of dependents; children, elderly, infirm, and disabled. And those on vacation. 🙂 The design initially requires a fifty-percent dependency membership of any mesh node. A mesh node will have about half its members be children, elderly, infirm or disabled. This builds empathy where competition of only “the best and brightest” destroys empathy required for social cohesion.
- Vote bank. Banking votes replace casting votes. Project contracts and project objectives are voted upon using a vote bank where votes are on permanent deposit and publicly available.
- Chain voting. Vote banks make chain voting possible. Voting blocks form as chains of votes. Votes can be deposited to use a proxy for any vote item.
- Corruption voting. Vote banks make corruption voting possible where voters can be paid for votes as long as the payment is public.
- Earth simulation AI. Simulation AI is used to simulate mesh project objectives over periods of time. In order to utilize the maximum number of variables possible then there will be one central AI. Initially the largest simulation will be Earth simulation AI. Solar System simulation will eventually be necessary.
- Virtual Earth, reality you (The Very). The Very is an extension of the Earth simulation AI. The difference is everyone on Earth can enter the Very as they appear in reality. This enables hyper-socialization. Everyone on Earth can meet and interact with anyone else.
- House AI. Each mesh node will have a house AI. This AI is simulation as well as control. This AI is analogous to the AI on Star Trek. The AI automates to the extent possible controlling systems of the mesh node. It also provides cyber-security from enemy mesh nodes.
- Cold network. Today’s Internet is referred to the hot network in New Democracy design. It is the hot network because it is real-time information. By contrast the cold network is local data in cold storage and not real-time. The cold network provides protocols for taking hot network information and sanitizing it for cold storage. This process can take days as the house AI analyses hot network data for attacks and conforms to the ethics and morals described in the mesh node charter of organization.
- Member daily monitoring. Mesh node management required for joining projects requires daily monitoring of members. Mesh node members are required to input exercise, diet, and other daily information into a smart phone like device. This device also contains an emergency button if the member is ever threatened by the mesh node members. This monitoring provides mesh member management with the information necessary to make mesh membership decisions. These decisions are not limited to just abuse corrections but also best fit. It will be far more common for members to be moved to improve the overall effectiveness of all mesh nodes in order to optimize project objectives.
Hopefully, after reading the various parts that make up the design of the New Democracy social engineering project then you have formed ideas of your own. There are parts you reject outright and parts you can see how to improve. To which I say, welcome! This is the spirit of engineering.
The rest of this book will expand on the design of these parts and how these parts make the overall design work. Hopefully you also see that all these parts are new. These parts and the overall design represent a new frontier than can only tangentially be compared to history. This makes New Democracy a new frontier, a place to explore new social organizations. Fear and excitement are two sides of one coin. Today we are in a comfort zone of established society. We are reluctant to give that up such that things have to get physically painful to make a change. And when it does, New Democracy will be here for you.
Overview: Old Democracy Comparison
Old Democracy here indicates any democratic government on Earth today and makes no distinction between things like parliamentary versus representative democracy.
New Democracy is a bit of a misnomer. Irreni Society is a social engineering project that includes every aspect of life and everyone on planet Earth. Whereas we tend to think of current democracies as Russian nesting dolls. Some city or local government that governs us is nested inside some larger land area government like a US State which itself is nested inside a national democracy.
Irreni Society is social engineering and as such has no government, let alone a nesting of governments.
So what’s with the New Democracy branding then? Well, if one asks someone what a democracy is then a common answer is one-person, one vote. Another is a government of the people, by the people, for the people. Irreni Society meets both of these definitions.
Historians have noted the US Constitution was an affirmation of what was more than an invention. For example, most Colonies already had jury trials. In addition, Colonies were made into States based on existing Colony formation being preserved without change where the biggest debate was slavery. In the same way Irreni Society is very much an affirmation. However, as an engineering project existing systems are analyzed, deconstructed and re-made with improvements.
For example, voting is still a principle currency in Irreni Society. One person, one vote is still a core principle. However, Irreni banks votes rather than cast votes. Banked votes are on deposit until withdrawn. Vote banks are a copy of today’s financial banks. Vote banks have walk-in support, ATMs and web sites to conduct currency transactions. However, major differences exist with financial banks. For starters, all votes are public. This eliminates polling. Vote banks can be tallied 24/7 to know exactly how people would vote. In today’s world a vote for President would be deposited and only changed for the next election. Vote banks also have security measures that are unavailable to vote casting today. For example, election day can happen randomly any day of the year as people always have votes on file.
Another example where Irreni engineering re-makes existing democratic principles is that of rights. Rights exist within Irreni Society. However, rights are changed to responsibilities. The key difference between rights and responsibilities is resource allocation. Irreni assumes only a limited amount of resources in the world, Responsibilities in Irreni engineering are all combined into a single pool of resources. Priorities of responsibilities are voted on by everyone as one plan to allocate resources against all responsibilities. Today, democracies assign rights to the resources of responsibility in isolation. It is better engineering to weigh total resources as one pool available for implementation of all responsibilities with priority. One can imagine a future pandemic where a large pool of world resources are required to move to meet the moment. Sacrifices in other responsibilities must be made. In Irreni we all vote on what gets cut, including on things like shut downs.
Let’s dig a little bit more into the engineering of votes in Irreni engineering since voting is our primary exposure in Old Democracy.
In the US we cast votes directly for representatives at all levels of government. In addition many cities and States have ballot measurements. Some ballot measures are constitutional amendments where others are laws.
In Irreni votes are counted indirectly.
Irreni is a mesh society. Mesh is fundamentally different than Old Democracy in that the smallest government is the sovereign government and not the nation. Further there is only one sovereign government and not the Russian nesting doll design. That sovereign is the mesh or micro governing organization, MGO. MGOs are fixed in size. MGOs have exactly thirty people. As a sovereign unit then MGOs are the only government to have life-and-death power over members. MGOs are the only unit that can imprison, impart corporal punishment, and hold trials for MGO members. MGOs can issue their own currency, enact trade deals, and anything else a nation does today as sovereign.
If you are a US citizen then the good news is that your vote for President won’t be as meaningless as one vote among 340 million. Instead, your vote for President will be one vote of thirty votes. Your vote matters. The bad news is that your MGO is the only direct voting allowed. Votes for things outside the MGO are as the MGO itself. This is similar to how member nations of the United Nations all get one vote.
In summary the only direct vote one has in Irreni Society is for MGO related business. Business outside the MGO requires the MGO to vote as a unit. To better understand this design an example is helpful. Let’s say an MGO’s primary business is farming corn. Further, the MGO wants to distribute its surplus around the world to trade using various projects. I say projects and not MGOs because MGOs in Irreni design coordinate via projects. Project contracts are where MGOs trade. Say the farming MGO wants some smart phones. The MGO either amends an existing project contract with their trade or they initiate a new project contract. In this case the MGO then deposits votes via the vote bank for the projects they want to trade corn. The MGO voting as a block forces the members of the MGO to agree on any MGO votes, perhaps by internally having a simple majority vote. MGOs only casting votes as blocks means MGOs are always represented as a block. Therefore personal direct voting only exists within the MGO.
Projects within Irreni engineering replace laws in current rule-of-law systems. Projects can nest to any level and this replaces local, State and Federal nesting of responsibilities.
Hopefully by now things are starting to come into focus for you. Irreni Society is New Democracy. It is of the people, by the people, and for the people. It is one person, one vote. It takes existing components of Old Democracy like voting and re-makes them like changing vote casting to vote banking. Projects replace rule-of-law and nesting governments.
But what about Christian Nationalism? Authoritarianism? Abuse of power? Seems like this must be addressed if we are to have New and Improved Democracy and not just New Democracy.
Irreni engineering addresses abusive power. However, to best understand the design a thought experiment is required.
Thought experiment:
How long do we want humans to survive and what does that look like?
The religious answer to the thought experiment is “the end times are nigh”. In other words, religion doesn’t expect humans to survive any later than tomorrow. This religious answer dovetails nicely with capitalism. Capitalism cannot make money on products that take hundreds of years to come to fruition. Or thousands of years. Or millions of years. Or billions of years. All of these lengths of time are viable answers as to how long we want humans to survive. Capitalism is married to religion in this regard. Capitalism and religion both live for the moment and just tomorrow.
Irreni answers the thought experiment question thusly:
We want to live indefinitely, until the end of the Universe. We want total genetic engineering of human and life existence that will be eventually distributed throughout all of the Universe. If we can then we should stop the expansion of the Universe, manage the collision of the Andromeda galaxy with the Milky Way, and manage the Sun’s decay from wiping out Earth.
Irreni Society is indefinite and long term society. Old Democracy lives in the moment where the end times are nigh. This is why managing climate change is nigh impossible in 2026. Long term planning just doesn’t fit into quarterly earnings reports.
Irreni engineering then is weird relative to today’s population living in Old Democracy. However, it is not the democracy aspects being different that makes it weird. It is the indefinite and long term planning of millions and billions of years that makes Irreni weird.
Oddly enough there is some thought today as to long term Old Democracy planning. It’s called effective altruism. The notion being that the current generation sacrifices for future generations. The proponents of this are the tech/crypto bros. These billionaires want to kill seven-billion people today. They want to reduce the world’s population to one billion, now. The claim is that this is the only way to sustain Earth’s resources. They got this notion from a Marvel comic book where Thanos snaps his fingers and half of all life dies. Only they want seven-eighths to die.
The tech bros are not completely off-base because they are the ones potentially making resource usage unsustainable given today’s population. Notably they are dumping billions of dollars into anti-aging research, or indefinite lifespans. The worst case scenario is they succeed and everyone starts living hundreds and thousands of years and yet birth rates remain the same. This is why they want to kill billions now.
So what is the right answer? Another thought experiment is helpful here.
“The long arc of history points toward justice.” – Martin Luther King, Jr.
Irreni Society updates the long arc:
“the long arc of history points toward desire and pure free will.” – Irreni Society
What do we want? We want complete control. Complete control of aging. Complete control of birth. Complete control of disease. Complete control of intellectual, physical and emotional capability. We want complete control of the design of humans with total genetic engineering. That could easily take millions of years. That is the long arc of history.
The Irreni solution to managing tech is the long arc of desire. We need to manage tech so as to achieve total genetic engineering control. This means any tech advances today like anti-aging that would create tipping points of imbalance with regards to today’s environment need to be shelved. The correct order is to do research to enable complete birth control. We want a world where women can completely choose to have a baby. That’s the first order of the genetic engineering business.
As stated above, responsibilities like aging and birth are all balanced against each other against total Earth resources. This is far more responsible than effective altruism vying for indefinite life-spans for the rich and killing off everyone else.
New Democracy then is long term planning of hundreds, thousands, millions and billions of years. Old Democracy just lives in the moment of capitalism and the end times are nigh of religion.
The following Overview chapters further flush out the engineering required to achieve a long arc of history obtaining pure free will.
Overview: Infinity And Beyond
To Infinity! And Beyond!
Irreni scales to infinity and beyond! Let’s dicuss!
I suppose I should give a sense of what is meant by the use of the word “scale”. In computer science the world scale does mean growth. To say Irreni scales to infinity does mean Irreni does grow to infinity. However, the world scale also means “at every size”. In other words that design scale works at size 1, 10, 100, 1,000 … A design that scales works at any size. In this chapter we are going to look at both size one and size infinity. Irreni scales to any size. Irreni can shrink as well as expand size.
Irreni scales infinitely and to any size big or small using one fundamental principle: all growth is horizontal.
Imagine there is a human society, the Spacies, that only exists on spaceships. Spacies have perfected building self-contained spaceships for human living. Ships have everything for those on board to live out a natural life. Power, food, water, medicine, dental, living quarters, and so on provide for life cradle to space grave. Further imagine that they realized the best way to survive is if all the ships had the same structural design. In other words these ships all supported the same population size.
A single ship design allows all the ships in the fleet to interchange parts. Manufacturing is simplified to one set of designs.
Let’s say the Spacies have a population of nine billion. The spaceship size is thirty people. This means there are 300 million ships. Thirty may seem too small. However the small size is intended to withstand disaster optimally.
Imagine a disaster occurs where some rogue asteroid tears through the fleet killing millions. Small ships have the best chance to change course at the last minute. Small ships minimize impact damage to approximate just the path the rogue asteroid takes. After the disaster all damaged ships have parts from millions of other ships to repair with or to use as lifeboats.
Now imagine the Spacies exist millions of years in the future. Over millions of years they have kept to the same perfected small design. The Spacies have colonized large portions of Milky Way. Imagine a fleet of Spacie ships meet that are hundreds of thousands of years old meet up with the latest versions. The spaceships are still the same size. The parts are still interchangeable. The fleet can expand and shrink seamlessly.
This is horizontal growth. Horizontal growth expands to fill the Universe or survives natural disasters the most. Horizontal growth expands in both time and space dimensions with equal success.
Now further imagine the Spacies have designed their spaceships to land on new planets and colonize them using the spaceship that flew through space. The spaceships land on solid ground and like a camper just roll out various ground features. Otherwise day-to-day life for the thirty people on the ship remains the same.
The Spacies have the most resilient and robust design for survival until the end of the Universe. Further, if we have any chance of stopping the expansion of the Universe technically in a trillion years or so then we’ll need to populate as much of the Universe as possible.
First lesson of infinite scale design is simplicity to the maximum extent possible is required. The simplicity provides resilience and robustness when disasters occur. Maximally complex designs scale the least.
One can intuitively understand that more complexity means more fragility by thinking about a game, Jenga. Jenga is a game where blocks of rectangular wood blocks are stacked. Blocks are removed until the structure collapses. One block removed collapses the entire structure. This is not possible with horizontal growth. Spread out all the blocks on the table. Remove one then only that block fails. All the others remain functional.
The US is going to completely collapse because it is complex. At some point one more Jenga block is going to be removed and the entire thing will collapse. Jenga in this case is corruption. The rich are robbing the US blind with a fever pitch. The rich are stealing everything that isn’t bolted down and they are loosening the bolts. They are playing Jenga in that they are all trying to remove blocks before the entire system collapses. This type of corruption is possible because the US society design is vertical and doesn’t scale.
Irreni design is a Spacies design. However, technology doesn’t exist today to live in space, only on Earth. So our fixed size “ships” are “Earthships” called MGOs, mesh/micro governing organizations. When Irreni Society covers everyone on Earth there will be 300 million MGOs where each MGO houses thirty people. The rogue asteroid disaster design benefits still apply. Horizontal design is the most robust design and the maximal number of humans will survive a rogue asteroid. Today our complex large scale societies are so fragile that such an asteroid would bring with it total social collapse killing billions that would not die in horizontal designs.
Horizontal design provides new opportunities in addition to replace vertical, Old Democracy designs of today.
Climate change is here to stay. The Earth is going to heat up. Perhaps Stone Age people would react better than we are today in that they would seek caves to live in. Horizontal MGOs could begin designing new Earthships to survive underground in caves. We could then start moving ever larger number of people underground, thirty people at a time.
This same design capability expands to living underwater.
Current designs by futurists posit that everyone should move to large cities. Now imagine a pandemic or asteroid hit that city. Pandemic technology in large cities would necessarily be much more complex than for MGOs.
Now is a good time to introduce the survival requirements for the horizontal MGO unit.
Every MGO is required to have on hand at all times one year’s worth of supply of food, water, and power. This seems odd to us today but it isn’t really once you settle in on it.
Today, we all go grocery shopping weekly to restock. Irreni also will have weekly grocery shopping. However the supplies will be to restock the year’s supply instead of using immediately. This is akin to getting off of living paycheck-to-paycheck to living on a savings of one year’s money supply.
The year’s supply of survival goods accomplishes two design requirements:
- Survival
- Social power, aka political power in today’s parlance.
Survival is illustrated by imagining the world in 2020 was horizontal and not vertical society. Everyone lives in an MGO. The Covid pandemic hits. Every MGO has one year’s supply of survival goods on hand. MGOs are sovereign. This means each MGO can decide to isolate up to one year with minimal penalty except forgoing perishables and such.
But it gets better. MGOs work remotely as design. Isolation is built into horizontal design. Each MGO has its own medical personnel and medical bay to handle vaccinations, etc. MGOs have all the infrastructure to manage healthcare at the MGO scale. Of course projects that require large numbers of people to work outside the MGOs will be scaled back or halted.
People would still die in a pandemic like Covid in horizontal society. However, MGOs would provide the highest survival-ability rates compared to nations today.
Social power is also illustrated with the pandemic as well. Irreni replaces governments with projects. In the future large scale human efforts in medicine will be done in projects. MGOs that want vaccines can attach themselves to such projects as either labor working on the project or as trade only for the vaccine. The MGO isolation design being horizontal means the 90% herd immunization can be avoided by isolating MGOs that don’t vaccinate. MGOs that don’t vaccinate are simply banned from providing workers to projects that have vaccinated workers.
Horizontal society design is ideology neutral. MGOs of differing ideologies co-exist with natural isolation boundaries. This is social power.
Let’s talk about tyranny, oppression and authoritarianism. You know, Christian Nationalism.
Irreni is not a Utopian design. Irreni is an engineering design of scale. Any ideology is allowed because Irreni is about functions provided by engineering.
The best way to think about Christian Nationalism and Irreni design is the same as with survival disaster. Irreni is designed to be robust and resilient in the face of tyranny and oppression and minimize the destruction caused. When a MAGA movement materializes in an Irreni world then the impact will be minimized.
Imagine MAGA takes off in a horizontal society. First they would withdraw from MGO society and build a vertical society of patriarchy/hierarchy. Perhaps they then go so far as to declare war on MGOs and start bombing killing, raping and plundering like in Gaza, Lebanon, or Iran today. The people of Gaza, Lebanon and Iran live at the mercy of the vertical government today. Not so in an MGO world. Each MGO of size thirty people is sovereign. This means new alliances can be built immediately at scale to meet any such threat. The MGOs in what is Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran today would have a year’s supply of survival goods on hand.
Irreni is a voluntary design. This means individual scan withdraw and join at any time. It also means MGOs can withdraw and join at any time.
An all voluntary design scales the best. Why? Because the horizontal design must, by design, be the most attractive possible in order to grow and maintain size.
Irreni attracts everyone via project zero. Project zero is management. Projects require all member MGOs treat their members with dignity in order to join a project. MGOs are allowed to have any ideology and any governing structure, including monarchy and theocracy that are maligned today. This is because Irreni is social engineering not social ideology. Irreni requires responsibilities and not rights. MGOs are responsible for educating, feeding, and otherwise being responsible with all MGO members. If any MGO harms and oppresses members they are not allowed to join projects based on member treatment requirements.
The largest project of MGO members will have the least requirements across all ideologies of MGOs and this is called project zero. Project zero designates the least set of responsibilities required for all its members: education, health, and opportunity. When an MGO meets all these standards then they are allowed to join project zero. Then the MGO can join any other project with stricter human management requirements along ideological lines for trade and labor.
Projects can be viewed somewhat like nations within the United Nations. It is expected that there will be many, many projects in Irreni. These projects will nest and where the largest MGO sizes will loosen MGO member requirements to form ever larger groups in order to address larger project requirements such as climate change. The largest management project that contains the most MGOs is project zero. Project zero then is a set of least common requirements that MGOs agree upon across all the ideologies that MGO management projects adhere to.
This system of nested projects is the most robust possible. Projects can scale from size two MGOS to the largest possible.
One other design feature of Irreni engineering that ensures scalability is that project contracts only last a maximum of five years. One way to image this is to imagine the US Constitution was written to include a “vote of no confidence” for the entire government to be taken every five years. Now, one can imagine that this might happen quite regularly. So, in order to prevent complete collapse what would happen is the project contract called the Constitution is constantly undergoing revisions. Whenever a vote of no confidence succeeds then a new Constitution that has already been approved is now put into place.
Irreni design requires project contracts to expire every five years maximum. Project contracts can have shorter durations. Various ideologies are always going to fight over ideological boundaries. Realize the initial project contract was agreed upon only when all its members approved. This means that the starting point was after approval of all things. Renewal of an expired contract then could mean many things. The size of the project gets smaller as MGOs withdraw on ideological grounds. The requirements of the project itself get smaller on ideological grounds. Both scenarios can happen where the MGO size gets smaller and the requirements get smaller. And, of course, the project just may just expire.
This horizontal design allows different competing ideologies fertile ground to compete maximally. It is engineering and not ideology itself.
Ideologies do exist that demand tyranny and oppression of all humans. Those ideologies will necessarily be destroyed in war. Such ideologies are called uncooperative ideologies. They refuse to cooperate with any other ideology. Irreni only supports cooperative ideologies.
So the horizontal design engineering of Irreni not only applies to MGO design but project design where projects have to be renewed every five years. This is somewhat analogous to the checks-and-balances of the US Constitution today where ideologies are balanced on State and Federal ideological lines. That is too coarse of granularity though. In Irreni there can be an unlimited number of projects and they can scale from size two MGOS to all the MGOs if possible.
Weird. As I said in the last chapter Irreni is weird in that it scales to infinity and beyond. Irreni is still a democracy in that it is of the people, by the people, and for the people. Each MGO has its own ideology. The principle of one person, one vote can apply within the MGO itself although MGOs are free to choose any governing structure they want, including monarchy. They just won’t be able to join projects unless their treatment of MGO members meet the responsibility requirements of treatment by project contracts. The project contract that contains the largest number of MGOs is called project zero.
Over time I expect that ever larger groups of MGOs will join project zero first since it has the least requirements and most MGO members. Then they will join more restrictive management of finer granularity ideology as they see fit.
Maximum effort!
To infinity and beyond!
Overview: The Personal Touch
The previous Overview chapters have talked about society at large, but what about the personal touch?
This is just an overview where the following Handbook chapters deal with the specifics of joining an MGO today. This chapter deals with a hypothetical situation that assumes Irreni MGOs already exist in 2026. It further assumes the entire world is MGOs so as to avoid any discussions about integrating with existing governments.
Is this going to get weird?
No. Yes. Maybe. Yes.
Previously I mentioned that Irreni is weird as a democracy because the society is designed to last indefinitely, until the end of the Universe. Today’s society lives in the moment where capitalism lives quarter-to-quarter and religion is always teeth gnashing that the end times are nigh.
So is it a valid question to wonder if MGO daily life will be weird? Like some hippy commune or some such?
No. Yes. Maybe. Yes.
As to the “No” answer, first realize Irreni Society is 100% voluntary and anyone or any MGO can opt out when things get too “weird”. Once one joins then there is only one sovereign “nation” that has control over people, the MGO. MGOs have exactly thirty people. If the entire world today were Irreni Society there would be three-hundred million MGOs or “nations”.
So the first anti-weird relief is that joining is voluntary and further millions of MGO lifestyles will exist to choose from.
The second anti-weird relief is MGOs are free to establish any governing lifestyle they choose. Someone can simply start an MGO with rules or a constitution of their choosing, including capitalism. MGOs can further create capitalist projects.
The third anti-weird relief is that MGO membership is contract driven and not “citizenship”. Members sign up for MGOs. Contracts can last up to five years. In some respects this is analogous to sports today where players are recruited and sign contracts.
So that’s the “No” answer. If someone wants a lifestyle similar to what exists today before Irreni Society then reasonable approximations can be found.
As to the “Yes” answer the first thing is dependency responsibility.
Every MGO and therefore every MGO member is obligated to care for dependents. Care for children. Care for the elderly. Care for the mentally unhealthy. Care for the sick. No pawning off caring for dependents. In the US today we pawn off caring for our dependents to nursing homes, foster homes or just not at all leaving them homeless.
Irreni Society requires everyone to be treated with dignity. Everyone has responsibilities where responsibilities replace rights. Taking care of the least of us. Taking care of those who won’t and can’t take care of themselves. This responsibility will impact every person in every MGO.
Previously it was stated that Irreni Society initially only calls for people to work half-time, or twenty-hours a week. That’s because the other twenty hours is to be used taking care of dependents.
Irreni project zero has a sophisticated scheme for ensuring dependents are optimally taken care of. The objective is not fairness within MGOs. The objective is optimal well being of dependents. The discussion of this scheme is outside the scope of this book. What’s important here is to note that everyone in every MGO will be taking care of dependents of one kind or another. This is weird relative to today’s society although it shouldn’t be.
Ignoring dependents is a disgrace that condemns all capitalist societies today.
Next, new technology will also be weird. Mostly because it is just new.
Again the discussion of new technology is outside the scope of this book. This new technology is required for everyone one Earth. Here is a quick overview:
- Earth AI. There is one Earth AI so large it has sensors from every place on Earth as input. It’s primary purpose is to simulate all project proposals as a kind of environmental impact study for every project. Its secondary purpose is an Earth Virtual Reality.
- Earth Virtual Reality. This is part of the Earth AI project. MGOs will have camera rooms. The walls, ceiling and floor will have projections of a point on Earth. People appear in the simulation as they are in reality. The Earth virtual reality allows everyone on Earth to conduct business with anyone else. It will also follow space travels to the Moon, Mars and everywhere off Earth.
- MGO AI. Each MGO will have its own AI to enforce its rules. The rules the MGO chooses to live by are used as a data model for the AI to then give answers as to implementation of those rules. The MGO AI also acts as first level cybersecurity to defend against outside attacks.
- Vote banks. Votes deposited into the vote bank are always public. This is weird and runs counter to today’s private vote casting.
- Continuous monitoring. Everyone has a smartphone where they report everyday with health and living metrics. This continuous feed of health and living data enables project management to ensure responsibilities for treating MGO members with dignity and fulfill contract requirements.
Things will also be weird because MGOs are survival units. This will be like living on a spaceship like the starship Enterprise. There will be somewhat of a military-like aspect where emergency drills and what not will be scheduled regularly to ensure things work. The MGO members will respond to internal disasters such as fires and floods. That’s not to say outside help isn’t available. However, relying on outside help makes the MGO dependent and not a survival unit.
So, in short, things will be weird relative to today’s societies due to everyone having: 1. Dependency responsibilities, approximately twenty-hours per week. 2. New technology responsibilities 3. Survival unit responsibilities
So that’s the “Yes” Answer. Everyone will have new responsibilities that do not exist today. The closest comparison to these new responsiblities today is to civic duty and public service. Today our “civic” duty is paying taxes and voting. Arguably paying taxes is somewhat analogous to working so many hours per week for public service. However, voting is the least we can do. Irreni Society expects far more civic duty and public service starting with twenty-hours per week of caring for dependents.
As a side note, all of these new responsibilities are relative to today’s society. In the future, perhaps millions of years, we will have complete genetic engineering control. Dependency effort will then be reduced to near zero or some minimum. The long arc of history points towards desire and pure free will. However, natural disasters and other forms of chaotic events in the Universe will always create dependent responsibilities.
And the “Maybe” answer?
Weird is culture dependent. This is called culture shock. Initially Irreni Society is going to be a large culture shock. No nations, no cities, no governments, no capitalism, no currency, as well as many other components of today’s society no longer exist except within MGOs and possibly as limited projects. However, once Irreni Society becomes the norm over a few generations then weird today will be the normal tomorrow. So weird is always a matter of how much culture shock one is exposed to either by choice or by force.
Further, Irreni Society is an all volunteer society. Individuals can refuse to join. MGOs can choose to go rogue and reject all management.
The establishment of Irreni Society is not by force of revolution or overthrowing existing governments. Irreni Society is established by convincing people to join. Irreni is said to dissolve existing governments, not overthrow them. Irreni Society has no ideology itself, just MGOs and projects. This means MGOs can live side-by-side or inside existing governments as long as the ideologies of the MGOS and projects align and fit within that society.
So that’s the “Maybe” answer. Irreni Society is 100% voluntary and anyone or any MGO can opt out when things get too “weird”.
The personal touch then is that things can be “normal” relative to today’s lifestyle in the sense that Irreni Society is 100% voluntary and one can simply just choose not to join. Once joining one can choose to create an MGO constitution or set of rules that approximate today’s lifestyle and keep things “normal” that way. Further, since there will be millions of MGOs, one can search for existing MGOs that have already established a lifestyle of your choosing. Find your tribe!
And “Yes”! Irreni Society is weird in that it creates a far more personal touch with millions of cultures relative to today’s hundreds of nations. Yes, civic and public service responsibilities in Irreni Society exist where everyone will incur on the order of twenty-hours per week of responsibility that far exceeds what is expected in today’s democracies. So Yes! Things will be weird.
Find your tribe!
Overview: Low Confidence Science
Imagine for a second a blank sheet of paper. Further imagine a solid black line in the middle of the page. On the left of the line is the word “History”. On the right of the line is “Social Engineering”.
We like to pretend that those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it. If that were the case then we could use history as technical models to provide social engineering, the right side of our imaginary page. But it doesn’t work. History cannot come close to science in providing models that can be used to control future outcomes.
Now, let’s take our imaginary page and replace “History” with “Philosophy”. In some sense philosophy is a distillation of history to create models to predict human behavior. Here’s the thing. Philosophy has no more success than just using history. History and philosophy both rely on something we call hindsight. Hindsight fits the facts to the model and ignores everything that would invalidate the hindsight “prediction”.
The failure of history and philosophy to provide any social engineering models of even slight success is why engineers such as myself “poo poo” history and philosophy as just ego trips.
Social engineering is built on science. Not history. Not philosophy. Social engineering uses the same methodologies for social engineering as any other other field of science.
Social science is a long established field. We have over a century of research.
So where are we at? Well, sadly, not far along. Social science is limited in scope, meaning it’s local to a small amount of time and number of people. Arguably social science is not much more capable than history or philosophy.
Take for example violence. Studies have been conducted on whether video games cause violence or reduce violence. There have been studies on pornography where prisoners were allowed access to pornography one year before release and then their crime rate compared to normal prisoners released at the same time. Have these studies born much fruit? Not much. The studies being inconclusive are valuable in debunking unfounded claims that video games cause violence or that pornography causes violence. The truth is that we still don’t know.
So what’s going on here?
Let’s set our eyes on what is arguably one of the most reliable pieces of social science to date: violence caused by poverty.
My very first investigation into social science was when I was in high school. I wanted to know if capital punishment reduced crime. Back in the 1970s there was a very public movement to ban capital punishment as inhumane. The advocates for capital punishment claimed without proof that capital punishment reduces crime.
Back in the 1970s Time magazine regularly included scientific reporting. Just using years of Time magazine articles in our city library I was able to piece together reports that all the studies linking capital punishment to crime reduction were inconclusive. There were too many variables to take into consideration. However, one variable that has on outsized influence on human behavior is poverty. Studies have repeatedly shown that high rates of poverty correlate to increased levels of violence such that poverty could be safely called a cause for violence and not just a correlation.
As far as I know this violence science still holds true today.
My second investigation into social science happened in college. I was interested in whether gun ownership reduced home invasion deaths. Gun advocates claim without evidence that guns reduce homeowner deaths. I wanted to see what science showed. The best study I could find was one conducted by the New York Police department. That study showed that in fact guns in the home increased the rate of homeowner death during a home invasion. There were two primary factors listed. First, the best strategy to survive a home invasion is to run. Always have exit paths mapped out. Homeowners with guns choose to stay and fight. The second primary factor is that homeowners are generally not prepared to kill someone. This was juxtaposed to the criminal. The criminal is amped up on adrenaline whereas perhaps the home owner is woken from their sleep. The criminal has mentally prepared to shoot before entering the house. This preparation increased the accuracy of the criminals in a shootout. The criminal was mentally prepared to shoot and mentally prepared to shoot to kill. The NYC police study showed home owners were more likely to die in a home invasion if they owned a gun because a.) they didn’t run, and b.) they weren’t prepared to shoot and shoot to kill. Further, homeowners are not trained for situational awareness. This lead homeowners to shoot through walls and kill other household members.
However, this NYC Police study was only one study so I wouldn’t base nation-wide policy on it.
I’ve read many more social science reports and studies. The conclusion I have today is that at best social science has low confidence on a large scale. Social science improves accuracy when variables or conditions are constrained to local time and space.
At this point one may be wondering then why rely on social science at all if it is barely more effective than history or philosophy in predicting human behavior?
Well, there are two reasons. Low confidence is not no confidence. Second, future studies can continue to improve on low-confidence effectiveness.
Okay, but how does one conduct low-confidence science? The answer is trial-and-error experiments based on existing low confidence science.
Therefore Irreni Society is an experimental society. Every project conducted by MGOs is considered an experiment. Every single one. MGOs only coordinate with projects, projects that are always experiments.
All project contracts being experiments means hypotheses are made. Expected outcomes are given. Measurements are made. Results are reported. The thesis here is that we can improve on social science efficacy by running millions upon millions of experiments where today we only have a few thousand.
Everyone will be aware of the improvement in social engineering as well as all the failures.
Another feature of experimental social science society is that all projects as experiments must be proven at a small scale before being implemented at a larger scale. Today, projects that roll out at a large scale initially are not experiments, they are ideological projects. Take, for example, the American Care Act, ACA. The ACA was initially rolled out at a national level that included all Americans. At a minimum it should have been rolled out for a single State to start. Successes and failures could have been analyzed and then another round conducted with two States. Then maybe ten States. But no, the ACA was rolled out to all fifty States in the first go. The fact that the ACA was rolled out to all fifty States in its first round means that it can’t be an experiment. There are no States without ACA influence to compare too.
We are starting to build a picture here of how to conduct low-confidence science. First, every social project is an experiment. Second, every experiment must start small and succeed before being tried at larger scales. But this is still not the best we can do.
Another improvement to our low-confidence science is simulation. The best example today of simulation is environment impact studies. These studies simulate what will happen to the environment when a project is implemented.
Irreni Society conducts simulation using an Earth AI. This Earth AI is used to simulate projects before implementation. These simulations have multiple benefits: 1. Approvals based upon simulation outcomes. 2. Simultaneous simulation of new and current projects. Project simulation is not performed in isolation. Instead project simulation is run side-by-side with other new projects proposed as well as current projects running. 3. Experiment result validation. The initial project outcomes will be suggested without simulation. Their initial approval will then be simulated and new outcomes will be created while being balanced against other projects running. Finally the end results will be recorded and compared to the Earth AI experimental outcomes predicted.
So we have three steps for conducting low-confidence science:
- Every project is considered an experiment and written as such.
- Every experiment must be proven to work at smaller scales before trying larger scales.
- Earth AI simulation is used to analyze new experiments being conducted alongside other new and current experiments.
This is a huge undertaking but one that must be done in order to be able implement social projects that actually work as opposed to just ideological projects of no proven efficacy.
In the previous chapter the weird aspect of always viewing every social effort as an experiment was left out. However, this experimental society is weird relative to today’s societies where laws are made based on ideology alone without any regard as to any confidence they will succeed.
Irreni Society is an experimental society. It is not an ideological society. The distinction allows Irreni Society to effectively dissolve existing ideological governments by proving social projects work at a small scale before committing larger resources.
Overview: Politically Incorrect vs Rights
This book is a conversation and not a textbook. No discussion here about itemizing the long list of various rights like the U.N. charter on human rights. Instead this discussion on rights is using the concept of being politically incorrect versus rights in popular culture that we all need to grapple with.
Fun fact, I’m the same age as Barack Obama, Jon Stewart and George Clooney. This makes me slightly younger than Bill Maher and Rush Limbaugh. Why does this matter? Because my guess is if people were asked if Obama was a Boomer or GenX then I’m guessing people would answer GenX. Whereas with Bill Maher and Rush Limbaugh people would definitely answer Boomer.
Technically I’m a Boomer being born in 1962 where GenX starts in 1964. However, any comparison between me and my brother born in 1958 regarding GenX vs Boomer would be similar where I would land in GenX and he in Boomer. There must have been something in the drinking water worldwide starting in the early 60s.
Rush Limbaugh and Bill Maher both had their careers take off in the 1990s. They both became popular for being “anti-woke” long before “anti-woke” was a thing. For Maher it was a TV show called, “Politically Incorrect” . Limbaugh started a radio career hating liberals for in part liberals being politically correct, or PC as he put it. Further they were both bullies. However, where Limbaugh fits the mold of a traditional “punch you in the face” bully, Maher was far more passive aggressive using comedy. Free speech was a common agenda for both and they both popularized free speech being part of pop culture even in 2026.
Benjamin Franklin famously said, “Your right to swing your fist ends at my face.” Free speech advocates took that to mean that unless fists are flying then all speech is your right since no physical violence occurs. Franklin didn’t believe that. Franklin was famously approached by a wealthy person to print slanderous gossip against one of the wealthy person’s enemies in Franklin’s newspaper. Franklin refused. The wealthy person then took to another newspaper to accuse Franklin of hypocrisy for not publishing his slander because Franklin promoted himself as a free speech advocate. He did this even after Franklin had offered to pay to publish the piece as a separate letter at no cost.
All this is to say that even today we treat rights as binary, black-and-white, even though that has never been the case. Yet still today that’s how rights are promoted. You have the right to free speech, not we have the right to responsible use of speech. This is why New Democracy drops the use of the word “rights” and simply states we have responsibility for the use of speech.
Responsible speech is something I’m good at even though I’m neurodivergent. I have no diagnosis. I share characteristics with autism and other commonly known mental health disabilities. One such commonality is that I do lack social skills. Personal relationships are mostly nonexistent in my life. I live alone and have most of my life. Yet, guess wha my exaggerated human skill is? If you guessed social skills then you’d be correct. I excel at social interactions in group settings.
I love public speaking. This really confuses people who try to get to know me. People get to know me in group settings and then are tripped up when my interpersonal skills suck.
My exaggerated skills matter because this capability is in part why I created New Democracy. As Spock said, “Each according to their own gifts.” My gift of social skill gives me this capability to create New Democracy. As I also stated in the dedication of this book, tax payers like you made this possible by paying for twenty-two years of education.
Being Politically Incorrect is being lazy. Maher likes to whine that no one can keep track of all the changes happening daily.
My exaggerated social skills allow me to speak a personal language. Speaking to each person using their distinct language comes naturally to me. Each person’s word usage for topics gets stored in memory without thought for me. This gives me an interpersonal social skill advantage over a normal person.
I long ago developed a diagnosis for people with limited personal language capability: weak character. For example, people who refuse to use preferred pronouns have weak character. Weak character is not a pejorative. People with weak character are just like me. They have social skill limitations. Mine are interpersonal, theirs are both interpersonal and social groups.
Here is a question, why would one purposely be weak? The person that one damages the most is themselves when being weak. One limits the set of people one can communicate with when being of weak character. Weak characters like Trump celebrate their weakness. I find this very odd.
This is what Benjamin Franklin had to say about bullies and free speech:
“I continued this … Habit of expressing my self in Terms of modest Diffidence, never using when I advance any thing that may possibly be disputed, the Words, Certainly, undoudtedly, or any others that give the Air of Positiveness to an Opinion; but rather say, I conceive, or I apprehend a Thing to be so or so, It appears to me, or I should think it so or so for such and such Reasons, or I imagine it to be so, or it is so if I am not mistaken. This Habit I believe has been of great Advantage to me, when I have had occasion to inculate my Opinions and persuade Men into Measures that I have been from time to time engag’d in promoting. And as the chief ends of Conversation are to inform, or to be informed, to please or to persuade, I wish well meaning sensible Men would not lesson their Power of doing Good by a Positive assuming Manner that seldom fails to disgust, tends to create Opposition, and to defeat every one of those Purposes for which Speech was given us, to wit, giving or receiving Information, or Pleasure: For if you would inform, a positive dogmatical Manner in advancing your Sentiments, may provoke Contradiction and prevent candid Attention. If you wish Information and Improvement from the Knowledge of others and yet the same time express your self firmly fix’d in your present Opinions, modest sensible Men, who do not love Disputation, will probably leave you undisturb’d in the Possession of your Error; and such a Manner you can seldom hope to recommend your self in pleasing your Hearers, or to persuade those whose Concurrence you desire.” –Benjamin Franklin, The Autobiography of B.F.
In other words, sensitive people will leave bullies undisturbed when bullies bully. This means bullies lose all the benefits of being around sensitive people in their lives.
Plato observed this same principle in his book, “The Republic”. Plato had two observations regarding sensitive people. First he was asked by a student if beating a prisoner was effective punishment. They were debating whether punishment could have a positive effect of preventing violent people from committing further violence. Plato famously responded, “Does beating a dog make it meaner or nicer?” Beating prisoners doesn’t make them more sensitive about committing violence. Second Plato observed that moral people will never be politicians. The reason being is that politics is inherently corrupt and sensitive people will not compromise their principles.
All this is to say that bullies have weak characters. They really should be diagnosed the same as autism or any other neurodivergent people as having a mental disability. I realize things are more complicated in that I have no knowledge how early childhood bullying common in many children growing up correlates with long-term bullies like Trump and Limbaugh.
I have a very strong character in group social settings. I’m the most word usage sensitive person in any room. This is because I naturally speak everyone’s personal language. Bonus, this means I also learn to use “politically correct” terms of common culture. I can be the least offensive person you’ll meet.
Bill Maher and Rush Limbaugh are not just lazy then. They are also disabled in the sense that they lack the capability to be sensitive. They compensate for this in different ways. Limbaugh by having been just a traditional bully. Maher by having a public campaign to limit sensitivity.
I bring all this up because rights as we see them today do not take into account capability. Some people are not capable of being sensitive. How does that stack up with free speech rights?
If you are a parent then you may be familiar with the nature versus nurture debate in psychology. As a parent what aspects of a child’s personality can be shaped by nurture and what aspects are determined by nature?
Rights assume all aspects of everyone person’s personality is nurtured. Another way to say this is that we are all born blank slates, tabula rasas, and free will means we are 100% responsible for every behavior trait we exhibit.
This is why rights must be done away with. It is important to note that rights grew out of religion. Religion also assumes all humans are tabula rasas and we are all responsible 100% for our actions and nature has no restrictions. Temptation yes, addiction no. Religion must also be discarded.
Religion predates “nature versus nurture” science. Because religion predates science. Autism and neurodivergent behavior is fixed by nature. Just like addiction. Religion historically has treated mental health deficiencies as demonic possession and the devil’s manipulations.
People having varied natural capability to conduct themselves socially so as to enforce rights is one reason rights need to be done away. In this sense Bill Maher and Rush Limbaugh were correct: not everyone has the same capability to be sensitive. Where they are politically incorrect is that this variation in capability should be enforced as some lowest-common-denominator social behavior. As Thomas Jefferson quipped, “As much as the public can tolerate.” Although that was in response to using Federal funds for charity and not free speech expectations. So, politically correct speech should be implemented “as much as people can tolerate”, yes and “least common people can use”, no. Bill.
Irreni Society then opts for responsibilities replacing rights because individuals have widely varying capabilities to understand and implement them.
So far this discussion has been in the “nature versus nurture” domain. In addition, rights have other real world limitations. The most obvious limitation is our time. Bill Maher would argue convincingly, “Who has the time to keep up with all these new politically correct terms?” He’s not wrong.
Let’s put this in another context. Imagine a planet buster asteroid is on course for Earth. Predictions are that half of the human population will die on impact. Further imagine we only have a few short years to save as many people as possible. We also need to limit how many get saved based on an ability to keep people alive after the impact.
This is called life-boat ethics. The right to free speech becomes meaningless to the people who are about to die. Rights then can be thought of like an onion with many layers that protect a core seed. Survival is the core seed. At some point the quality of life layers kick in and this is where free speech resides as an outer layer.
Lifeboat ethics then is about making trade offs including who survives. In our planter buster asteroid scenario should we just attempt to save the most amount of people possible to survive the impact? Or perhaps set the number to save to some population that can survive for years of solar darkness due to ash covering the planet?
These kinds of dramatic lifeboat exercises can help bring answers into clarity. There exists a finite set of real-world resources to implement rights, including survival.
Irreni Society implements responsibilities as a tension. MGOs are a survival unit. MGOs can withdraw from management at any time. This is made possible in part because MGOs are required to have a year’s supply of survival resources at all times when under management. What this means for our lifeboat asteroid scenario is that each MGO can withdraw from any larger discussion of responsibilities. This is to everyone’s benefit. People making a sacrifice on behalf of others should only do so voluntarily. This is like when the Titanic sank and men agreed to the ethic, “women and children first” when it came to who got a spot on lifeboats. Everyone had the right to survive when the Titanic sank. Men had an equal right to a spot on a lifeboat. However, those men felt that the responsible thing was to put women and children first.
Irreni Society is women and children first in that it favors responsibility over rights. Responsibilities are voluntarily implemented in order to optimize outcomes. We don’t want to force responsibility, known as oppression. Humans have been shown to do the least effort possible when forced to carry out responsibilities. This is why MGOs are free to opt out of management at any time.
Getting back to our onion example, responsibilities are layered and not isolated. Irreni Society layers responsibilities as layers of projects. Each project contract includes responsibilities each MGO joining the contract must enact. The more layers the more responsibilities. The more layers the more the ideological sum of the responsibilities add up too. As Thomas Jefferson said, each MGO will accept as much ideological responsibility as that MGO can take.
However, unlike an onion, Irreni Society project layers are more like the strata of millions of years of Earth rock than rings of a tree. There will be tectonic plates of large sets of distinct layers of responsibilities and within each tectonic plate there will be various groups of layers. Project layers are complicated where an onion or annual tree rings are not.
We will have all the rights laid out by the U.N. commission of human rights in Irreni Society. However, they will be project specific where largest projects have the most responsibilities we call rights today. The smallest project is survival. This project is called project zero. It has the least requirements for MGOs to implement, survival requirements we call rights today. The smallest set of responsibilities project is survival. This project is called project zero. It has the least requirements for MGOs to implement, survival requirements. Every MGO will have the seed responsibility of survival to start with. As an MGO demonstrates greater capability to meet more requirements then they may take on participation in larger projects of greater responsibilities that we call rights today.
Overview: Metaverse
New Democracy is a metaverse. New Democracy is an experimental culture where all public works are evaluated as experiments. Experiments require laboratories. These laboratories produce metadata; results about whether the experiment succeeded or failed. The laboratory is a meta process for creating metadata, a metaverse.
It’s been in the news recently that Facebook is shutting down its $77 billion virtual reality project called Metaverse. At the time the Metaverse was first announced I thought that this was a strange choice of branding. This is because the word “meta” came to popular consciousness via Edward Snowden. Snowden revealed a massive surveillance project, PRISM, that collected metadata on all Americans. The US Government is spying on all citizens without a warrant. The US Government pushed back saying that metadata was not owned by any citizen and thereafter usage of the word “meta” took off.
In Dungeons & Dragons we call what the US Government is doing being lawful evil. This is defined as following the letter of the law, but not the spirit of the law. One can say with absolute certainty that the people who wrote the US Constitution would have included metadata, data about data, if they had been aware of it.
So it always seemed odd to me that Facebook branded its virtual reality as “meta”. A word made popular by a 1984, Orwellian spying project PRISM. Evil. Branding a product as evil is weird.
As Benjamin Franklin said, those who would give up a little freedom for security and safety deserve neither. We Americans gave up our metadata for security and safety and now deserve neither safety or security.
Meta in software engineering does not just refer to data about data like the phone numbers and IP addresses of Internet messaging. Meta also means any process used to create and collect the metadata in the first place.
For example, Internet logs of log data recording all the URLs that visits a site are metadata. The logging software application is a meta application.
I bring all this up because New Democracy is meta, it doesn’t provide direct solutions to problems even though I “tongue in cheek” claim “I have all the solutions(tm).”
New Democracy is a laboratory. A laboratory can be thought of as a meta process. The laboratory defines the experiment, runs the experiment and then results of the experiment are recorded. The laboratory is where the experiment is conducted. In other words a laboratory is a metaverse. It is an artificial setting to collect metadata about experiments in order to determine if the experiment proves some hypothesis correct.
New Democracy is a new laboratory of culture experiments. We can now seek out new solutions to formidable problems today that have no opportunities for solutions because our culture is stagnate.
For example, recently CNN provided investigative reporting that upwards of 62 million American men are learning, promoting, and reinforcing r*pe culture online. Those of us who have been studying r*pe for decades have been aware of these large r*pe statistics for decades. They are not new. The only thing new is the use of online videos.
- 80%-90% of r*pes go unreported
- 60% of r*pes are committed by someone known to the victim
- 98% of reported r*pists walk free
The stats in this reporting go back to the 70s. These stats are staggering to think about. If 98% of r*pists go free where only a tiny 10% are reported then only a tiny percent of r*pes get convicted. In other words, our prisoner system only reports “violent offenders” if r*pe statistics are left out. It is not uncommon to see headlines like “violent crime is down 20%”. This is only possible if r*pe is left out. In other words the 90% never reported.
This is known as a defeatist attitude. I’m a Christian. I think the world is going to end tomorrow, therefore I make no plans for tomorrow. Climate change is destroying humanity. Addressing climate changes requires plans for tomorrow. By not having plans for tomorrow then I will eventually prove I’m right. The world ends.
But it is not just r*pe and sexual assault that is being denied justice.
- 99% of people in prison are there on plea deals, no trials
- 99.9% of civil actions are arbitration, no trials.
Our culture’s “justice” is not justice, it is arbitrary. Plea deals are not justice. Arbitration has the word “arbitrary” built into it. It is not justice. We have massive justice problems with seemingly no avenue or opportunities for improvement. We have no person suggesting solutions for any of this. This is because we need an environment for providing opportunities to find solutions. We need a laboratory. We need experiments to determine the best way to change culture. However…
Old Democracy doesn’t scale, it doesn’t work as population size increases because it can’t adapt to growth. We are stuck, We are fixed in place, sinking in the quicksand of disintegrating society. A society that is insane. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again even as we grow. We are stuck on the insanity of playing musical chairs where politicians circle around and when the bell sounds, we vote in a politician to fix things. They aren’t fixing anything.
Are there solutions though? Religion would have us think things will always be the same. And yet…some native American tribes would sleep as a tribe in a big tent. Oh the snoring! Shiver 🙂 Still, one has to wonder if differences in cultural behavior like this would improve behavior towards women? We won’t ever know unless we free our minds, free ourselves from our mental slavery.
Our mental slavery is best described as western culture slavery brought on by capitalist stagnation. Capitalism profits the most by selling everyone the same thing, the same culture. Like Coke. Capitalist cultures stagnate, they do not adapt. This is due to continuously selling us the past as the present without change in order to maximize profit. If not for our culture being obsessed with continuously adopting new technology then our culture would be stuck drinking Coke forever. Fini.
Today, New Democracy has no immediate solutions to our intractable Old Democracy problems like violence against women. That’s because we don’t know the solutions. Rather, New Democracy is a metaverse, an experimental culture. MGOs of fixed size 30 people are the nations. 300 million nations is an experimental culture.
First off, New Democracy removes old stagnate culture blocks:
- No nations
- No hierarchy
- No capitalism
- No currency, just direct trade
- No land private property
We must remove these blocks. If we are afraid of change then we are perfect capitalist captives, perfect capitalist market, and perfect capitalist slaves. We must embrace change. If not? Well…in the TV series Firefly, a perfection of capitalism is depicted:
One nation.
In Firefly the final nations merging were China and the US. The final nation is called “The Alliance”. That’s our future. Stagnate. Everything is the same. Pure profit of least products. Don’t get me wrong, the capitalists will always be at war. However, illusion will be sold to us as change. Brands. Colors. Logos. These will satisfy as differences for us to preen about as is our individual nature. To be individuals.
Capitalism isn’t our only large culture problem. We also need to address the elephant in the room: religion. Religion is a fixed culture and there is nothing more to say. Religion and capitalism make a perfect couple. Husband and wife. Why? Stagnate culture. Fixed society. Diversity is the enemy of profits and religion. Slight diversity within White Christian Nationalism culture is a match made in heaven between capitalism and religion.
New Democracy doesn’t address religion per se. That’s because unlike capitalism, religion is broadly defined. We will have to tackle managing religion one day at a time.
And time is of the essence. Our window of time to eliminate capitalist tyranny is closing fast. By contrast, regrouping as a new culture will need many generations. Once the rich get their hands on indefinite lifespans and other genetic engineering advances that they reserve to themselves, then it will be game over.
New Democracy is a new culture laboratory, or metaverse. There are 300 million micro-nations as our laboratory equipment. They can be combined and isolated depending on the experiment hypothesis. We do have Old Democracy ideas to use as hypothesis for New Democracy experiments today. Inventing New Democracy has meant studying sociology since the 1980s. Here are some Old Democracy r*pe hypothesis threads to pull:
- R*pe is violence. Solve violence, solve r*pe.
- Religion makes masterb*n bad. Make masterb*n good.
- Testosterone levels. Violence in males subside with age.
We have no Old Democracy avenues of opportunity to study those hypotheses today. We can’t treat nations as part of some experiment control. Heck, we can’t even treat States within the US as experiment controls. New Democracy is designed from the ground up as a new permanent laboratory of moving away from trial-and-error evolution to trial-and-error science.
New Democracy is spying. Or, rather, monitoring. Experiments need metadata. New Democracy requires everyone to have Internet access and a smartphone. MGO members are required to input data daily about what was eaten, exercise taken, sleep information and so on. This is the only way science works, observation.
New Democracy is also meta in that it requires billions if not trillions of new sensors to be deployed all over Earth. New Democracy requires an Earth AI. This Earth AI will use these billions of sensors for temperatures, soil, wind, rain and other data to simulate new projects. If we are going to manage climate on Earth well into the future, then we need permanent whole Earth AI simulation for all large scale Earth impacting projects.
New Democracy is also meta in that it is a virtual reality similar to Facebook’s Metaverse. The Earth AI for Earth simulation is real time and real data only. There is no fabrication. However, the VERY, or “virtual Earth, reality you”, is a clone of the Earth AI. It is real Earth with you moving around it. It requires every MGO to have a camera room. This room will have projectors for walls, ceiling and floor. The people in the room are given coordinates as a room with the VERY. People are projected as they actually appear. This VERY allows for people to meet and communicate with anyone else on Earth without the time and resources required to travel. We just teleport. Unless you wanna walk. 🙂
New Democracy has all the solutions(tm). New Democracy has all the solutions not because it has the solutions, but because it is the laboratory required to experiment on all the solutions indefinitely. New Democracy is a permanent culture of forever experimenting in order to adapt to our Universe indefinitely.
New Democracy provides meta solutions using meta monitoring and meta virtual reality.
New Democracy is a metaverse culture and thus requires high tech to create its culture.
Welcome to the actual metaverse.
Handbook: A Fellowship Of The Ring
This chapter is about a quest to find thirty people, a fellowship, and then to practice trusting those people creating a ring of trust: a Fellowship Of the Ring.
We need to learn to society again. Sociologists have long documented the breakdown of society since 1900.
- Breakdown of the family and work starting in 1900.
- Breakdown of the neighborhood in 1950.
- Elimination of the stranger in the 1970s. The Eagles song, “New Kid In Town”, was the last pop song about a stranger. 🙂
- Final family breakdown in the 1990s due to the microwave oven eliminating family meals.
- Loss of bowling and bowling alleys virtually overnight in the 1990s.
Societies transitioning from 90% direct agriculture labor before 1900 to only 2% by 1980 radically destroyed previous culture leaving nothing durable behind. New technologies constantly being introduced continuously destroys society faster than societies can adapt. That’s the challenge.
Prior to 1900 there were no roads, no indoor plumbing, no telephones and no electricty. People worked the land to put food on the table via hunting and farming. There weren’t grocery stores on every corner. A nearby railroad may have provided flour and such in some general stores, but certainly no packaged food. We had to cook. Life in 1900 would have been easily recognizable to those who founded the US in 1789. Not today.
Technology constantly upsets the social apple cart. Today society is once again being threatened by AI where the large corporation Oracle just recently announced laying off 30,000 people due to AI. In fact, AI corporations are wanting to eliminate millions of existing jobs.
Today we do not trust. We do not trust the government. We do not trust the media. We do not trust schools. We do not trust vaccines. We do not trust AI. It would be easier to state what we do trust, which is not much.
We need to learn to trust again, to society again. This is why our first quest is called, “A Fellowship Of The Ring”.
Welcome adventurer! Would you like to go on a quest to help Thorin and his party of Dwarves reclaim their ancestral home and treasure, which has been seized by the dragon Smaug?
A little too much? How about just a quest to learn to dance?

Figure 1. Twonks Tap
Any quest of significance requires a company, a fellowship. But how big? Well, it depends on the roles needed. In “The Hobbit”, Gandalf recruited Bilbo as a thief. Or, in moder.n Dungeons and Dragons terminology, a rogue.
I started playing D&D when it first came out in the early 70s. The standard company size was four people. Generally something like a fighter, a thief, a magic user, and a cleric. But that’s kinda small. For example, with that configuration there is no ranged or bow capacity. So perhaps the party would have a fighter, a thief, an archer, a magic user and a cleric.
When it comes to tap dancing even a quest to learn how to dance would require a dance instructor and dance partners.
But tap dancing and dragon hunting are not what we are about here. We are about New Democracy.
Our party size in New Democracy is a fixed thirty people. The size is not based solely upon the roles needed. Why?
First, thirty seems kinda too big doesn’t it? Well, continuing with our example of a D&D party of size five then New Democracy requires we double that for redundancy. I mean you are kinda screwed if your D&D party healer dies. Or even the fighter. So, we doubled the size of the party to ten for redundancy. Further, we are building society and not adventuring. That means we will have dependents such as children, elderly parents and the infirm. So we’ll double our size ten to size twenty to include one dependent for every adventurer. Finally, we don’t live in medieval times now. Today a company would need more than five roles. At a minimum we’d need a doctor, a lawyer, communications, marketing, computing, engineering, and various support roles such as cooking. Our adventurer team size then easily grows to size ten. We double that for redundancy and we get twenty. We double twenty to include dependents and we get forty. However, we cap the number to thirty as a convention.
Thirty is a convention and a standard. It is not a science or some ideal role count derived number. It is mutually agreed upon for no other reason than to have a standard. Think of thirty like the size of a car today. Cars are designed to fit roads. Roads were initially designed to fit horse-drawn wagons. We’re still driving wagons.
The benefit of a convention is that we can build cars and roads anywhere in the world and guarantee new cars, old cars, and cars from different countries can drive on the same roads. We can still drive on roads over one-hundred years old. The fixed size thirty convention fills likewise purpose.
So adventurer, your quest to begin New Democracy is to establish a fellowship of a ring of trust of fixed size thirty people. We need to rebuild society with better trust. And we want this new society to withstand new technology continuously being foisted on us. The quest then includes a requirement to also build a durable society. A robust and resilient society that can permanently withstand the relentless upheavals of new technology.
This new trusting and durable society defines New Democracy. A society of the people, by the people, and for the people. Permanently. New Democracy uses a mesh design to achieve this goal, to withstand the test of technological upheaval. A mesh design is a convention fixed size thirty mesh nodes combined with projects for mesh nodes to work together. The MGO size convention is simple enough to scale infinitely in time and space. It is simply enough for most humans to understand.
This first quest of establishing a fellowship of size thirty represents one of only two components within New Democracy design: MGOs and projects. MGOs, or micro-governing organizations, are fellowships of fixed size thirty. They are the new country, the new nation. These new nations coordinate using projects. Projects then are the second of two New Democracy components.
New Democracy is not about establishing a government. New Democracy is about establishing a trusting society. Old Democracy has taught us that a separate government sitting atop various coordinating societies doesn’t build up social trust, it destroys trust.
So the responsible thing is to establish a society and call it New Democracy.
In some very real sense an MGO is a castle with a moat. Alligators protect the moat. These castles establish two boundaries:
- Individual trust within thirty people.
- Technological advancement moat for external trust
Anyway, back to our quest to establish a fellowship of the ring of trust. This means we need to rebuild family units. We need to rebuild the neighborhood. We need to bring back the stranger concept.
An MGO as a nation means those inside the MGO are personally trusted. Everyone outside of the MGO not so much. Of course MGOs will have other MGO neighbors. This will begin providing natural layers of trust that, like an onion, will have many many rings of ever larger size of trust. These rings are called projects they coordinate groups of MGOs.
Okay, so this chapter mission is clear: form an MGO. How do we do this? Quests say very little about how. However, let’s discuss some options as both real things you can do and food for thought if they don’t apply to your situation.
Legal advantage. First, form a corporation. Corporations are people legally in Old Democracies. We are going to use that to our advantage. We are going to start “for life” corporations. These corporations are for supporting life. They will have external business to make profits. This “for life” company will have various capabilities such as a medical bay, a dental bay, a legal team, a software team, and a manufacturing team. Establishing these “micro-teams” of one-or-two people enables the MGO to have an expert skill to trust the outside world. The MGO trusts its internal teams then these teams provide the expertise of trust for the external world.
Baby steps. Start with just two people. From a corporation of two people. Create a set of by-laws for the company that represents your fellowship’s “constitution”. Publish the by-laws/constitution publicly and solicit new members. Use existing communication tools such as Discord, Slack. MS Teams, Facebook, What’s App, or even smoke signals 🙂 to communicate daily. Gradually build your fellowship one person at a time to thirty people.
Pool resources. Corporations allow us to pool resources. This is a fundamental component of trust. We share Netflix passwords with our twenty-nine new friends. 🙂 Corporations buy things at a discount. Corporations buy Internet service cheaper than buying that same service as one individual multiplied thirty times pricing.
Trust exercise. Trust is a talent that requires daily practice. This is no different than say a sport like tennis where an individual has to practice daily to maintain skill level. Trust is no different except it is a group exercise. One example from my personal life comes from World of Warcraft, an MMO game. Warcraft has raids that can have as many as forty people. An MGO could have all its members create a guild, or team, in Warcraft and play raid as a team. Or your MGO will create bowling teams of five and go bowling. Play card games. The point is trust needs daily workouts. Establish those trust exercises.
Side quests. Side quests are needed to build trust. For example, we need bowling alleys in order to bowl. If your fellowship wants to bowl as trust exercise then building a new bowling alley may be needed. Another side quest is academic. Trust can be taught in school. Establish public schools and online courses to teach people how to trust. Another side quest is filling roles instead of finding them. If some new member signs up to fill a role they have no experience in then the fellowship may need to send them to get a standard education for being a nurse or something like that.
Side note. Okay, the trust school may seem weird. We could learn something from the wizard Gandalf from the book, “The Hobbit”. You see, one night the fellowship was under threat of being eaten by dire wolves as night was about to set in. Gandalf devised a scheme to shelter in a local Giant’s house. The only problem is that giants don’t like dwarves. So Gandalf devised a scheme to gradually introduce the twelve dwarves two-by-two. Giants love stories and Gandalf was a great storyteller. He and Bilbo first went into the Giant’s house for protection. The Giant agreed for the price of a story. As Gandalf proceeded into the story he would whistle and then introduce the Giant to two more dwarves. The Giant being enthralled with the story begrudgingly agreed to two more dwarves spending the night. Eventually all twelve dwarves were safely inside. That’s a lesson in trust.
Enjoy. Probably one of the most quintessential observations made about Western society is that in the process of making a living we forget how to live. We don’t want to duplicate these worst aspects of Old Democracy. We want to ensure that all aspects of fellowship life makes a living and also lives.
MGO community. Join or create a community for MGOs. MGO teams can build libraries of information recording best practices. MGOs can support each other by trading success and failure stories. Existing MGOs can help new MGOs get started by acting as training officers.
We’ve reviewed a few suggestions above. The Earth has eight-billion people. The suggestions here for how to create an MGO successfully are just that. Corporations being legal people will suffice on some parts of the Earth and not others. Not everyone bowls, don’t ask me why. Hopefully, though, the suggestions provided enough food for thought such that you feel like, “Yeah, I can do this.” For you to feel like, “Yeah, you know, it sounded weird in the beginning but now I get it. We are just forming groups to take advantage of group benefits missing today.” For you to feel like, “Yeah, I don’t understand New Democracy but I do understand just this one thing, forming an MGO.” New Democracy is engineering and any part can be taken advantage of as a part. An MGO is one part.
So adventurer, are you ready to go on a quest? A quest to create a fellowship of a ring of trust? The overall objective is to rebuild society.
The following chapters will talk about common quests for MGOs to build out the MGO. Quests like buying land for a campus of thirty people. Or establishing buildings for storage of food and water. Quests for building power plants to a campus of thirty people.
Enjoy!
Handbook: Day 1, Starting an MGO
This chapter assumes accepting a quest detailed in the chapter, “Handbook: The Fellowship of The Ring”.
To recap, your quest is to find thirty people, a fellowship, and then to practice trusting those people creating a ring of trust: a Fellowship Of the Ring.
But how?
First thing to understand is that an MGO has two states: managed and unmanaged.
A managed MGO needs to meet all the requirements of a management project. This chapter and your first quest is about how to establish an unmanaged MGO. Relevant here is establishing a company of exactly thirty people.
Second thing to understand is that as an engineering project this means building out an unmanaged MGO will have benefits every step of the way. The benefits don’t kick in once the quest is completed. The benefits are continuously gained.
The first step you could take is to realize the benefits of pooling resources.
In the United States a corporation is a legal entity with much of the same rights as a person. Corporations take advantage of this legal entity to pool resources. Corporations can open bank accounts and buy products and services the same as any individual. Further, corporations give discounts based on bulk or large size volumes. Costco is an example of this where a Costco customer initially had to have a corporate account to get past the front door.
So your first step of your quest is to form a legal corporation. The goal is to save money by pooling resources. The corporation can act as an extended Costco. The corporation pools money from its members and everyone saves money. Saving money is a real world incentive to entice people to join your MGO company. Just be advised that fees and taxes apply. For example California requires every corporation to pay an annual $800 fee. Cities also require fees and taxes. Be sure to investigate and be aware of any fees and taxes the corporation is obligated to pay each year regardless of the amount of money earned or loss. Given this then you might want to wait to file the paperwork. Instead start a campaign to find the thirty people before starting the corporation. Once the thirty people are ready then the annual taxes and fees can be spread out amongst the thirty people. Of course if you or anyone in your company is willing to pay the taxes and fees individually then you can start the company then.
Corporations generally have two types of members: directors and employees. The simplest form of corporation is to have everyone be a director, no employees. Federal and State laws mandate certain director roles: President, Treasurer and so on. Note that these roles are paper roles only for legal purposes. They have no bearing on the operation of the company. As a New Democracy company then theobjective is one person, one vote. Each person is a director and each director has one vote. However, since this is still unmanaged you can still opt to form your corporation as a traditional hierarchy. Although given this is a New Democracy MGO then that kinda defeats one of the main purposes of New Democracy, which is to eliminate hierarchy. You can start a corporation and just ignore all aspects of New Democracy. This is the beauty of engineering versus ideology. Ideology requires adhering to the ideological worldview. Engineering is about function.
While saving money is an important benefit gained from starting a corporation it is not the most important. The most important is to find common cause, find your tribe. Every company needs to establish legal by-laws. These by-laws define how the corporation is going to conduct business.
For our purposes here, let’s think about MGOs as if they were guilds; an association of people with similar interests or pursuits; an association of merchants or craftsmen.
What is your passion, trade or craft? Computers? Art? Electrician? Plumber? The notion is to start a guild that focuses on craftsmanship or skill. What comes next will be the formation of the company. Perhaps the company will just focus on training the skill and nothing else. Perhaps the company will become for-profit and sell goods and services. The interest and pursuit of the guild determines the structure of the company and its by-laws.
Following the establishment of your guild’s particular type comes the charter. I would recommend keeping the charter separate from the by-laws. Derive the by-laws from the charter. A charter is simply a document that states explicitly the business of the guild and its purpose and obligations. This charter should be flexible when bringing on board new members. Everyone should have their distinct purpose and obligations reflected in the charter. The overall objective is New Democracy, not hierarchy. The charter becomes the honey to attract members. First is the guild type, second is the charter, and third is the charter being flexible and incorporating aspects of all new members.
You are not obligated to think about the company as a guild. I’m just suggesting this to get the ball rolling. A guild brings clarity and focus to the company overall and binds people to a common sphere of trust.
Now let’s talk about dependents. New Democracy is everyone in. Every single person on Earth should be able to join. This includes the old, the infant, the criminal and the homeless. Irreni requires a 50% dependency load as part of the managed requirements, or fifteen people. You are under no obligation to do so on day one being unmanaged. However, being family friendly will attract a wider audience. Corporations that are made up of entire families send a signal that your company is New Democracy. Now let’s talk about contracts. New Democracy is 100% voluntary where people can join and leave any time. Irreni requires managed MGO members to be under contract where the longest contract is five years. I recommend doing this on day one. Here’s an example contract:
I, , agree to join this company _ for a duration of five years. There are only good-will benefits and bad-will penalties. This contract can be terminated before five years if the company approves of the termination per the by-laws. If I terminate the contract unilaterally and leave then the only penalty is bad-will for breach of trust. This breach of trust may be communicated to any person whatsoever for any reason to anyone who asks for a reference about fulfilling five years per the by-laws. Good-will references may be expected for fulfilling the five-year duration per the by-laws.
Of course there is nothing preventing a company from adding any incentives and such to the contract. What was just provided was the simplest contract about trust. Our quest is to build a fellowship ring, a ring of trust. The five year contract is one aspect of this trust.
Again, as an unmanaged MGO there is no obligation to use contracts for members. These contracts will only be required upon joining Irreni management.
Let’s talk about the meta guild.
What is a meta guild? A meta guild is a guild that teaches other guilds how to form a guild. The business is guild making. I already mentioned that forming a corporation incurs an annual set of fees and taxes just for existing independent of financial gains and losses. That’s about the least of it. In the United States we have for-profit and nonprofit corporations. We have LLCs, S-corps, C-corps, and seemingly endless types of corporations. Every corporation is going to need financial accounting with accounting software implemented. A meta guild is a guild that helps new guilds by supplying trained meta members. A meta guild reaches size thirty and becomes proficient at setting up guilds. They then splinter perhaps in half or one-third where the splinter joins a new guild. This new guild now has members well versed in the legal and technical aspects of running a corporation. Perhaps the meta guild members only sign a one-year contract to kick things off and then off they go to help another guild.
Meta guilds are going to be the fastest way to establish a mesh. A formal mesh is a collection of MGOs that coordinate via managed projects. An informal mesh is a collection of MGOs that coordinate however they see fit, but it is still recommended project contracts be used.
At first blush a meta guild may not seem a day one concern. However, teaching others how to start MGOs will quickly become one of the most common guild types. The objective is to have all eight billion people join an MGO. This will take generations to realize and meta guilds will be required all along the way.
Handbook: Direct Trade
While these chapters are intended to be read independently, this chapter does assume an MGO of fixed size thirty people as detailed in the chapter, “The Fellowship of The Ring”.
So, your fellowship of the ring of trust is established. You have an MGO of fixed size thirty people. The first logical quest is direct trade.
Why trade? Well, from what I’ve read of history the thirteen US colonies were all successful in their own way in trade before the revolutionary war. The colonies set up a trade triangle of whiskey, tobacco and slaves. Lumber, sugar, and other products were also heavily traded. Trade was the foundation that Britain wanted from the colonies and the colonies excelled at it.
Trade is the logical first step for establishing New Democracy. So the first quest after forming your MGO, your fellowship, is to establish trade. You may not know this but capitalism didn’t exist in the colonies prior to the Revolutionary war. Taxes did, of course. Taxes lead to the Revolutionary war. So the quest will be to establish direct trade without taxes. Direct trade doesn’t involve public currency. This means no capitalism and no taxes.
Quests are statements of objectives and not statements of how to go about them. The quest is to establish direct trade within the MGO where direct trade means no currency, no capitalism and no taxes. For example, garage sales are popular in the US. Garage sales are a way to direct trade for small amounts of cash that one typically isn’t reported for tax collection. Your MGO could establish garage sales monthly for just members of the MGO. Why just MGO members? Because there are two objectives of this quest. One is to establish direct trade but the second is to continue to practice building trust. Your quest, adventurer, is to establish direct trade that builds trust within the MGO.
The rest of this chapter is food for thought. Examples of ways your MGO may go about this.
Flea markets are a form of garage sale. Are they direct trade? Well, if one makes more than a fist full of dollars then you probably want to report that for taxes. Is there a way to hold a flea market without paying taxes? Yes. Direct trade of item exchange. I give you a power drill, you give me a coffee table. Let’s call this an exchange flea market. Say, once a month your MGO members meet in some yard and bring items to trade.
The valuable aspect of garage sales and exchange flea markets is that no computer software is needed. People just talk to each other and learn to barter. I can just hear people in their mind thinking, “but why do this physically? Why not use some computer software like a spreadsheet?” Well, the quest includes learning to trust people. In addition, any time computers are involved then the trust is biased to those more comfortable using computers.
Potluck Markets build on exchange flea markets. Again the notion here is to build MGO community trust. So, don’t just have a garage sale or exchange flea market sale, have a potluck market sale! One could have variations on this such as a Picnic Market. Or perhaps a Street Festival market! Add some live music. We need to rebuild our societies and what better way than food and music! One can still maintain the direct trade without money and do pretty much anything done today as far as trading used items.
The importance of live direct trade events to build trust cannot be overstated.
However, of course we’ll be wanting to use computers.
Perpetual market. The first computer market is the perpetual market. A perpetual market is simply listing all for exchange items in some software application in a permanent inventory. This software doesn’t exist today. The idea is simple. Just list items for exchange in a permanent inventory per MGO user. The benefit here is people within the MGO can view exchange items 24/7. So, how is the trade initiated? Easy? Remember this is limited to the MGO of thirty people. The MGO should already have a directory of MGO members with phone numbers, or Discord server, or Slack server, or MS Teams server, or whatever communications technology is being used. Just talk to the owner directly.
IOU market. An IOU was a marker people used when currency wasn’t available. An IOU was a pieced of paper listing what was owed. In this case an IOU market would be for intangible things like labor. Say, for example, one offers to trade labor of mowing someone’s yard for three months in exchange for a coffee table. The IOU computer software would allow the labor items to be listed and further tallied as the labor is provided. The IOU market works well with a perpetual market in that the ongoing tally of labor items can be tracked.
Trust side note. There is another chapter on MGO suits, but it is worth pointing out that people are always going to sue over even the smallest perceived slights. For example, say a power drill was traded and it breaks on first use. The power drill owner wants some kind of refund even though it was traded for as is. Your MGO should already have established some trust resolution process. This is a key part of learning to trust. This is also why the direct trade quest should be limited to just those in the MGO. This way the conflict resolutions can apply.
Bulk market. Pooling resources is a core benefit to forming an MGO corporation. The MGO can buy say Internet service as a corporation and then distribute that to every MGO member much cheaper than if buying the Internet service individually. However, the bulk market distributes to only a subset of the MGO members leaving some members perhaps wanting to trade. Say the MGO buys 25lb. bags of rice from the corporate cash. How to direct trade not using money? One idea is an open bar. This is similar to how corporations provide free soda, tea and breakfast foods in a break room. In this case perhaps sundry bulk items are stocked such that everyone benefits from something in the open bar. Or, an IOU market could track how much bulk items are used by MGO members and then some future item or labor exchange is agreed upon.
MGO community direct trade. As MGOs become more common, MGOs can build on their internal trust skills using internal direct trade to branch out to other MGOs. When MGOs trade they trade as MGO units, not as individual members. Further, MGO community networks should cap their MGO network to size thirty. Thirty times thirty is nine-hundred people. That’s a fairly large group. But, if that thirty size network of thirty MGOs happens then the same concept applies. These groups of 30 would network with other groups of thirty.
Private currency. Bitcoin is literally nothing special. It is just private currency. Private currency is not allowed for public sales. Private currency builds on a bulk market. Anyone who has worked in a somewhat large corporation are familiar with corporate shops that sell swag. The corporate swag is usually listed with two prices. One price is in dollars and the other is in corporate private currency. A common case of this is holiday gifts. Corporations commonly give out say $200 corporate dollars. An employee can though go through the corporate swag shop and buy a mug or other corporate gear using the gifted holiday corporate private currency dollars. The idea here is similar. For example, say every member of an MGO is given $100 MGO dollars. Further bulk items are broken up into smaller items of sale for less than $100. Direct trade can be augmented with corporate private currency items. Say I direct trade my power drill for your coffee table and $2 MGO. Private currency augments bulk markets by offering common items at fixed private currency prices in order to allow for granularity.
Everything presented here is direct trade and is public currency free. No public money means no taxes.
